May we momentarily lapse into a little namedropping? Here we go: DOCTOR ROCKIT, HERBERT, THE MATTHEW HERBERT BIG BAND, WISHMOUNTAIN, RADIO BOY and MR. VERTIGO. All alter-egos of busy-bee Matthew Herbert, who has been musically active for 10 years now. As innovative and experimental musician/producer Herbert has often disregarded the conventions of the electronica genre. His leitmotiv is the self-imposed PCCOM or Personal Contract For The Composition Of Music. In it he defines his own working rules, including 'sampling of other peoples music is strictly forbidden' or 'mistakes are encouraged'. With this manifest Herbert attempts to present his music in a more 'original' manner.
Herbert has now released more than 10 albums, collaborated on records from Björk and Roisin Murphy and remixed performers like Moloko, R.E.M., Cornelius and Serge Gainsbourg. As if that wasn't enough, he also leads the Accidental Records label on which performers like The Soft Pink Truth (Matmos), Icelander Mugison and also Kitty, Daisy & Lewis have an on-again/off-again homebase.
In '03 Herbert made waves with 'Goodbye Swingtime' under the name THE MATTHEW HERBERT BIG BAND (with the likes of Jamie Lidell), the big band jazz-project, with which he made it to prestigious festivals like Jazz Montreux and North Sea Jazz. This autumn the follow-up album 'There's Me And There's You' will be released. You thought that Herbert had no link with jazz? Well, at sixteen years of age he actually already toured Europe as part of a Glenn Miller Tribute Band ... Just one more thing: THE MATTHEW HERBERT BIG BAND will be performing as a group of 16.
