Lykke Li (she leaves out her surname, Zachrisson) is a contrary 22 year-old Swedish pop songstress with a rock solid debut in her pocket. Titled 'Youth Novels' and produced by Bjorn Yttling (yup, the one from Peter, Bjorn & John, known for their mega-summer-tune 'Young Folks'), the album has been making waves in the United States for a while now. It contains 14 songs she wrote herself and that lie somewhere between whisper-pop and minimal beats, with Lykke Li's sensual husky voice as beacon. Call it a crossing between Emiliana Torrini and Robyn. At the end of this summer you'll finally find the CD in record stores here. You should already know the single 'Little Bit', the second one 'I'm Good I'm Gone' is in the making.
With 'Heartcore', Wildbirds & Peacedrums from Sweden produce a fine and fragile album on the more than suited Leaf label (see also: Efterklang, Murcof and A Hack And A Hacksaw). The craftsmanship is in the essence, as this duo's core work consists of drums and vocals: the acrobatic voice of Mariam Wallentin coils soulfully around Andreas Werliin's inventive drum parts. As far as references go, you get a long way with Joanna Newsom, Björk and with a bit of goodwill a touch of Anja Garbarek.
