Loudon Wainwright III, alias LW3 (as stated on his website). Finally returning to the AB for the first time since May 2005. Not that this American singer-songwriter veteran has lost any of his power or has been sitting still!? Quite the opposite: this is indestructible stand-up Americana! Certainly with three fine albums out in the meantime: 'Recovery' containing (forgotten) masterpieces, keenly re-recorded by Loudon and Joe Henry.
Then there was 'High Wide & Handsome: The Charlie Poole Project', good for a 2009 Grammy for Best Traditional Folk Album and Charlie Poel (that's right) wrote of it in Humo: 'A tribute to the singer/banjo-player. Wainwright returns to the best known traditionals of Poole's oeuvre (who didn't write any music himself: check) and supplements them with especially-written songs about the man's short but flamboyant life... The music is old-timey (banjo, mandolin, fiddle, dobro, cello, acoustic guitar, horns or an amplified bass now and then) but never old-fashioned.'
Finally, there is also the exceptionally entertaining '10 Songs For The New Depression' that Loudon himself splendidly promotes as follows: 'As of this writing some folks are saying things are looking up recession wise and this particular hard time might be ending. Other experts are saying we’re in for a "double-dip" and there’s more feces heading toward the national and global fans. If that’s the case I’d like to cash in. So buddy if you can spare a few bucks, please enjoy "10 Songs for the New Depression"! LW3 Jan. 2010.'
Oh, yes, both Martha and Rufus can call him Pa. But every music-lover, Anglophile, German Philologist and ukulele-lover can come cherish Uncle Loudon too. A must-see for those who like their lyrics and music sharp-witted!
By the way, support act will be Lucy Wainwright Roche and you read right: daughter of Loudon and Suzzy Roche, apparently began her professional career as backing-vocalist for brother Rufus, meanwhile with two EPs out already: '8 Songs' and '8 More', now with a complete album too: 'Lucy'. That's obvious. It's also obvious that this is certainly becoming an extremely opulent musical dynasty, where 'everybody in the family sings for their supper.'
