09:30 pm Lonnie Holley
Lonnie Bradley Holley – sometimes also called The Sand Man - is an intriguing personality. He was born in 1950 and would appear to have suddenly found his momentum at the age of 63. At the same time, Holley is an all-round artist. Before he even started a musical career, he was focused on creating Afro-American sculptures that were mainly made with found objects. Those around him considered him to be an eccentric. But his work did make it as far as the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the New York American Folk Art Museum and even into the White House.
Holley’s musical aspirations took form in ’12 when the famous Dust-To-Digital label released his first studio recordings under the title ‘Just Before Music’. His musical sound is unique and entirely improvised, just like his ‘lyrics’. The artistic vanguard (with the likes of Bill Callahan, Animal Collective and Deerhunter) immediately stood to welcome him with open arms. In the meantime, he has released a second album ‘Keeping a Record of it’ with imput from of the likes of Deerhunter and Black Lips.
08:00 pm Mammane Sani
The evening with Lonnie Holley will now become a real double bill with the addition of Nigerian musician Mammane Sani. Sani has been playing music for more than 30 years and is seen as a pioneer of West African electronic music, and as one of the first African musicians to begin experimenting with electronic sounds. His first - and also only album - ‘La Musique Electronique du Niger’ - was recorded for national radio in ’78 and released on cassette. In ’13 a re-issue of this album appeared via Sahel Sound and Mississippi Records, it was immediately acclaimed. Comparisons with Terry Riley and Kraftwerk were legion.
