Fans: Batida, Björk, Herbie Hancock & Mbongwana Star!
It still happens far too infrequently: bands from Africa with an entirely own sound, one that wins European hearts and has them assigned good spots on traditional rock/pop stages. Congolese Konono N°1 were able to do it though. What’s more, icons like Herbie Hancock and Björk have lined up to dive into the studio with them. Countrymates Mbongwana Star (the late Staff Benda Bilili) – one of the revelations of’15 – also opted for a musical marriage with them in ‘15.
For their new album, Konono N°1 will be working with none less than the excellent Angolan/Portuguese electronic/world producer Batida, who is also highly rated by Stromae and Damon Albarn. The result certainly sounds exciting and resulted in the album ‘Konono N°1 meets Batida’. Konono N°1 will be performing in AB without Batida though.
