Unique tribute to Lady Day for her 100th birthday
‘Verbluffend eerbetoon aan Billie Holiday. ... Adembenemend.’
(De Morgen)
Billie Holiday – one of the most unique voices ever borne by the jazz world – would have turned 100 in 2015. True to tradition, there will probably be so many tributes that you'll be tripping over them, but it will be almost impossible to raise the standard higher than ‘Yesterday I had The Blues’ by AB house artist Jose James.
‘Yesterday I had The Blues’ is the embodiment of a production AB set-up with José James in '12. Jose James has now recorded this production for the famous Blue Note label. The result sounds refined and does justice to Elinora Harris, the name Billie was born with. The uncanny version of ‘Strange Fruit’ alone – that he recorded with a loop station – is breathtaking.
