BB King: 'I didn't think anybody could play like that. Jools has got that left hand that never stops.'
The Jools! Familiar from TV, recognised for his time with Squeeze, but completely in his element as bandleader. In full that is: Jools Holland and his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra featuring Gilson Lavis and guest vocalists Ruby Turner & Louise Marshall! Now you’re thinking of ambiance, warm ambiance and thrilling craftsmanship on a rocking Friday night!
Little Jools was a fluent pianist at the age of eight, was in Squeeze at the age of fifteen (‘Cool For Cats’, ‘Up The Junction’), formed his first Jools Holland Big Band in 1987, and in the meantime played with – deep breath - Sting, Chrissie Hynde, George Harrison, Norah and Tom Jones, Eric Clapton, David Gilmour, Bono, Joe Strummer, KT Tunstall, Robert Plant, Smokey Robinson, Ringo Starr, Peter Gabriel, Solomon Burke, Alison Moyet, Michael McDonald, Booker T, Allen Toussaint, Sandie Shaw and more.
Even more great (and new) names have of course appeared on his legendary TV programme, 'Later... with Jools', since 1992(!), Jools having previously shone on shows like The Tube and two much-discussed documentaries on 'the roots of American music': 'Walking To New Orleans' and 'Mr Roadrunner'.
More truths can be found in his autobiography 'Barefaced Lies & Boogie-Woogie Boasts'. More praise such as 'Music curator for Prince Charles' green initiative Start'. And even more great organic music is available on his latest CD 'Finding The Keys - The Best Of Jools Holland.' Let us rejoice!
Support act will be the local and harmonious 1060, here in an acoustic version for an avant-première of the new CD. Then, a week later, they'll be presenting it in full glory at the Botanique on Thursday 26 April.
