SBTRKT & JACK PEÑATE launched her. Now she's going it alone.
“I want to be a pop star, in the classic sense, like Annie Lennox, or Sade, or Whitney.”
(Jessie Ware)
Quite a quote and introduction. But now you know how high Jessie Wares expectations are. Jessie Ware was first picked up by Jack Peñate, for whom she provided backing vocals - live and on vinyl. Via Peñate she came to SBTRKT (with whom she recorded a number of tracks on his debut) and dubstepper Joker.
Enter 2012. Jessie Ware is ready for her own debut: ‘Devotion’. An album in which she combined the ultra modern feel of downtempo R&B and British electronica with a dose of ‘melodrama’ from classic pop stars like Sade and Whitney Houston. Jessie about that: “I wanted to combine electronic with a more classic songwriting. I didn't want it to feel too 'of now', so that's why I went back to beats and grooves of things I loved before, like Prince and Chaka Khan and Grace Jones.”
Her first Belgian indoor concert – after a visit to Pukkelpop this summer – will take place in the AB Club. Catch her before she gets big.
