Gilles Peterson: ‘Absolutely mind blowing!’
The very first jazz album was released 100 years ago: The Original Dixieland Jass Band with ‘Livery Stable Blues’. That’s why AB will be paying extra attention to jazz for a year. From contemporary classics to musical troublemakers who are inspired by jazz, to the latest incredibly headstrong jazz generation from local soil.
Free for those attending the Avishai Cohen concert on this same evening in the Main Hall.
WHO
The London jazz scene is as hot as fuck and – following on from revelation Shabaka Hutchings (Sons of Kemet, Comet is Coming) and Yussef Kamaal – we have Ruby Rushton as the latest exciting shoot on the modern jazz tree. The lynchpin is saxophonist/ flautist Tenderlonious, who has a predilection for both jazz icon Yusef Lateef and the hip-hop of J. Dilla.
Line-up: Tenderlonious (sax & flute), Nick Walters (trumpet), Aidan Shepherd (keys), Fergus Ireland (bass), Joseph Deenmamode (percussion), Eddie Hick (drums).
FOR FANS OF
Yusef Lateef, John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy, J. Dilla & Kamasi Washington.
QUOTE
‘Their live show is a throwback to the 70’s Headhunters days, whilst still fusing new, exciting and contemporary flavours. Expect high energy, deep afro rhythms and Dilla inspired grooves. Essential for fans of Kamasi Washington, Yussef Kamaal and GoGo Penguin.’
PROGRAMMER
Kurt Overbergh: ‘Check hun boiler room set en word instant fan.’
FUN FACT
The band is named after the grandmother of central figure Tenderlonious. The album title ‘Trudi’s Songbook’ is an ode to his mother and the label 22a simply refers to his address.
