Jasper Erkens is 16 and irrepressible. Sturm und Drang from Diest: guitar for his eleventh birthday, own songs at the age of twelve, first concert at thirteen, first ex-girlfriend at fourteen and silver medal and Audience Choice prize in HUMO’s Rock Rally 2008 at fifteen. Quite something! Since then: an impressive and high-speed course. The widest smiling person of his generation plays support-act to international toppers like Adele and Colbie Caillat and jams with Elliott Murphy. Moreover, his cover of Gnarls Barkley's ‘Crazy’ effortlessly convinces every listener; not in the least the folks from Studio Brussel who push the song into high rotation.
Jasper Erkens is a profuse writer and his songs sound more mature than his age would suggest. No wonder, the young man consumes copious portions of Damien Rice, Nick Drake and Jeff Buckley, and at home receives young Bowie as dessert.
At the start of next year An Important Event follows: the release of his first CD. At the moment the curly-top is busy working with Fritz Sundermann (Elisa Waut, Junior Jazz) on the songs for his debut.'It has to be good from the start', says Erkens. 'Because I want to convince everyone and even the whole world, if possible. It's as simple as that'.
