Brain behind Balthazar makes minimalistic R&B solo debut!
It had to happen: Balthazar’s side project J. Bernardt now also appears in Ancienne Belgique as well! Following on from Maarten Devoldere (Warhaus) and Simon Cassier (Zimmerman), now Jinte Deprez is to appear on the glorious stage of AB too.
Jinte must have thought ‘kill your darlings’: contrary to his colleagues, he has stepped into an entirely new musical adventure, far from his characteristic guitar and ditto harmonies. J. Bernardt represents modern, minimalistic R&B with mild influences from electronica and soul. He words it as “a mishmash of The Doors to Edith Piaf, to Daft Punk”, although Chet Faker and James Blake are never far removed.
First single ‘Calm Down’ is of international class, bathed in a delicious synthesizer groove and with tight electronic drums, in which Jinte even styles himself as a charismatic crooner. Live, he will be assisted by Adriaan Van de Velde – the brain behind Pomrad – and Klaas De Somer (drummer with Tourist LeMC and Pomrad). Dancing allowed!
