Spell 31: new album full of essential & tasty global neo-soul!
Finally back, after quite a few musical collaborations (see the videos.) The hyper intriguing Ibeyi remains the blissfully singing twin sisters Naomi and Lisa-Kaindé. They have Cuban-French crossover roots and, since their 2015 debut CD, have been impossible to beat on global stages (and media because energetic, photogenic, unique...) Now ready with follow-up 'Spell 31' on the -euh- excellent XL label. The basic formula remains: those super-playful tunings, percussion and keys. But Ibeyi also eagerly injects his/her/their sound palette with more current accents. And the sisters express themselves just as fluently in English, French, Spanish or (faraway mother tongue) Yoruba. Sophisticated and witty engagement, or in the best English of Pitchfork: 'gorgeous, genre-agnostic meditations on resilience and mindful resistance'.
