Ex-Hüsker Dü drummer and co-writer (later also Nova Mob) at Minneapolis, Mon Amour
Grant Hart from Minneapolis was known as drummer and co-songwriter of the phenomenal Hüsker Dü that made a milestone in music history with ‘Candy Apple Grey’. The song ‘Diane’ from their album ‘Metal Circus’ - that was later successfully covered by Therapy? - is his work. He and the other Hüsker Dü members each went their own way in 1987 and Hart commenced a solo career. After 1 solo EP and solo album (containing the masterful ‘All Of My Senses’ that was also a radio hit here) he established the band Nova Mob in 1989. The album ‘The Last Days Of Pompeii’ was released 2 years later. Hart has been out and about solo again since the mid 90's and 2 years ago he released his most recent album ‘Hot Wax’.
Hüsker Dü saw the light of day in Saint Paul, the sister city of Minneapolis, and seeing as Hart still lives there he certainly couldn't be missing from this concert series around the musical heritage of that American city. In Augustus 2011 it will be exactly 30 years since the release of the debut by American rock band The Replacements (‘Sorry Ma, Forgot To Take Out The Trash’). An anchor point in musical history that the AB makes good use of to present the likes of Soul Asylum and Grant Hart concerts, and also an exhibition on the Twin/Tone label.
‘COLOR ME OBSESSED – A Film About The Replacements’ is the first and, at the same time, the ultimate documentary on this influential rock band from Minneapolis. Director Gorman Bechard interviewed fans, friends and like-minded musicians and succeeded in avoiding the classic ‘music documentary’ format. Hailed by Spin Magazine as ‘The Last Best Band’, The Replacements became a milestone in the American guitar scene and was later a much appreciated source of inspiration for performers as diverse as Green Day, Winona Ryder, Indigo Girls and They Might Be Giants.
“The Replacements should have been the next Rolling Stones, and to the people who loved them, I think they were.” (Gorman Bechard, director of ‘Color Me Obsessed’)
Following the screening of this documentary, Gorman Bechard will have a live conversation with Grant Hart about the film, The Replacements and the Minneapolis music scene in general.
