Do the Fixkes still exist. Yes, they do. They have a new CD out very soon too (‘Superheld’, release: 8 March). Full of fuck-buddies, not-quite-love, rock-'n-roll that jumps off cliffs, women with a screw loose, superheroes and bar magnets. Small-town streets too.
Are the Fixkes still worth listening to? Hell yeah! As ever, with Sam Valkenborg’s inexhaustable unique lyrical universe (sometimes we’d like to live in Valkenborgh’s head for a week) set to a lazy hip hop-infused backbeat. Or just plain, movingly simple like in ‘LDVD blues’ (a fine interpretation of the Hank Williams-classic ‘Lovesick Blues’), ‘netniliefde’ or ‘Just Lek in de film’. Or also - indeed worth the listen - the brand new, driven single ‘Rock-n-Roll’.
Just see: ‘Superheld’ will almost completely come to life in the ABClub on Tuesday 16 March, as Fixkes has promised to bring the majority of the superheroes who sing on the album along with them too. Such as: the tallest rapper from Antwerp city: Meta, known to all: Flip Kowlier, Lais-lady: Annelies Brosens, Maximus …
