Prince Family? Wendy & Lisa Sister? Madhouse!
We begin with the necessary name-dropping! As this is a delicious funky surprise. fDELUXE are so named because they used to be called The Family and were no longer allowed to be. Forbidden by godfather Prince? Apparently. But what they can't mask is that immediately recognizable tight sound à la Prince & Co: singer Susannah Melvoin is - amongst other things - the sister of Wendy (& Lisa); St Paul alias Paul Peterson has played with the likes of The Time; Eric Leeds we know from that masterful instrumental Madhouse Prince project, amongst other things, and Jellybean Johnson (also to be seen in the Purple Rain film) is undoubtedly one of the most impressive drummer-guitarists!
Any further hints? You can also find the original version of ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’, that Sinéad O'Connor hit, on their 1985 debut CD and Susannah is also co-author of the much appreciated ‘Starfish And Coffee’ (also known here in the Bart Peeters version!)
So fDELUXE it is from now on… and at the same time, finally, with new CD 'Gaslight' as strong and varied visiting card.
This concert is, of course, a part of the AB project 'Minneapolis, Mon Amour': this musical clan's original homebase (St Paul is even named after Minneapolis' 'twin city' but you knew that already, of course, didn't you?)
Where does the name fDELUXE come from then? Little f, big luxury!
