Malian refinement and social engagement!
We usually situate Fatoumata Diawara in Mali, while she was apparently born in the Ivory Coast and is now equally at home in Europe. But the music of this songstress, guitarist and actress has its roots in the sounds of the Wassoulou region and has so since her debut ‘Fatou’.
Add to that the more recent fierce successor ‘Fenfo’ (or remember previous AB visits) and you have a stage appearance to look forward to. Something that Gorillaz’ extensive audience knows by now too.
But aside from Damon Albarn, she has also worked with Roberto Fonseca, Toumani Diabaté, Disclosure, Yael Naim, Bassekou Kouyaté, Yemi Alade...
And of course there was also her seasoned role of 'forbidden' musician in the endearing ‘Timbuktu’ film.
After the even more recent EP ‘Maliba’ and her contribution to the saving of the Timbuktu Manuscripts, she now promises new work soon. Those who, aside from her fine music, also appreciate the colourful (but also critical) video clips can again expect that impressive intertwining of authentic, driving music and social engagement.
‘Nsera’ will be the first promising single, again with Damon Albarn.
