Fatoumata Diawara is a child prodigy. Born in Ivory Coast and grew up in Mali. With 'Fatou', her exciting debut CD from 2011, and fiery visits to e.g. De Roma still valid as impressive references.
That CD is out on the wonderful World Circuit label (see too: Buena Vista Social Club, Ali Farka Touré...) Fatoumata sings and plays guitar herself (something not taken for granted in her tradition) with the occasional assistance of van Tony Allen, Toumani Diabaté, Jon Paul Jones...
Singing, playing and composing, Fatoumata is talented enough for all of that. But she has also been acting since a young age, in films like La Genèse, spent years with the French street theatre Royal De Luxe, and was even involved in the musical Kirikou & Karaba.
Along the way, she also toured with Oumou Sangaré or Dee Dee Bridgewater and, after the recent turmoil in Mali, she became a pioneer of the Mali Ko (La Paix) project with the likes of Amadou & Mariam, Habib Koité...
Fatoumata can also be heard prominently on recent work by Roberto Fonseca, including the recordings of 'supergroup' Rocket Juice & the Moon (involving Damon Albarn, Tony Allen & Flea).
But enough namedropping, Fatoumata Diawara is the one!
