Klara & AB present… An Evening with Laika:
Evil Superstars (Cosmic Synth Set) + Fennesz + William Basinski + Anthony Pateras + Samara Lubelski + Mittland Och Leo + Andy Votel plays Finders Keepers
Klara, Laika & AB get together!
The Klara programme Laika extends beyond its evening intimacy on Sunday for the first time. Because Klara and AB want to celebrate the great enthusiasm with which Laika is made. Also because it was about time for a public ode to that black-white bastard terrier from outer space, Laika's musical muse. It goes without saying that Laika found an ally in AB, a music temple that Klara knows likes sneak a peek at all sorts of music.
AB is, in turn, a long-time fan of the radio programme Laika on Klara. A programme that has now dispatched about 300 Sunday evenings into the cosmic ether since '06, and
provided the most diverse musical adventures. Laika has the guts to seamlessly combine Brian Eno, Max Roach and Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood in the same quarter of an hour. Respect!
What's more, it's a programme with a mission: "Laika presents new stars in the Klara heavens, blows the dust off golden oldies you've never heard and allows you to feast upon music you have to have heard." Basically: 'Laika is adventurous, non-classical and gentle on your physical health'.
More than enough good reasons to convert the entire AB into Laika headquarters on Saturday 26 January and have it bathe in the Laika vibe. A refined musical programme was composed by presenter Lies Steppe and the other Laika-compilers, Philippe Cortens and Mauro Pawlowski. Aside that programme, an additional menu containing such things as short film screenings of Laika favourites, a true Q&A with the Laika team, a book shop by The Wire and a vinyl shop with kosmische music.
Be there!
With kosmische greetings,
Chantal Pattyn (Network Chief) & Kurt Overbergh (Artistic Director AB)
Evil Superstars (Cosmic Synth Set) (b)
Mauro Pawlowski reunites his fabulous Superstars especially for Laika. That hasn't happened since '04, when they interpreted 'Jerusalem', by stoner band Sleep, in its entirety in AB. So not your average Evil Superstars - not that there has ever been an average Evil Superstars - but certainly a set full of 'cosmic synthesizer music'.
Fennesz (a)
Austria's Christian Fennesz - who's already visited the AB 3 times in the past - knows how to combine innovative but refined electronica with a vibe-defining guitar style like no other. He's already worked with folks, and grandmasters, like David Sylvian, Mike Patton and Ryuichi Sakamoto.
William Basinski (us)
American avant garde composer and sound artist who wrote electronica history with 'The Disintegration Loops I-IV'. His unique sound 'happened' to him while converting analogue reel-to-reel tapes to digital files. The recordings for 'The Disintegration …' were finalized during 9/11 and the departed twin towers also adorn each volume in this series. To honour the marking of 9/11 earlier this year, this work was performed by an orchestra in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. What's more, Antony (van Antony & The Johnsons) is a fan. Basinksi was also to be heard, together with Antony, in the fabulous opera 'The Life and Death of Marina Abramovic' by Robert Wilson.
Anthony Pateras (Aus)
Australian pianist/composer with by now impressive oeuvre that extends from minimal to noise. Pateras lives and works in Brussels but tours worldwide. His work has appeared on both the impressive electronica label Editions Mego as well as on John Zorn's label Tzadik (!). At the moment he's in the studio to record an album with none less than Mike Patton. He's working on a new composition especially for Laika.
Samara Lubelski (us)
American violist/singer Samara Lubelski has been active in New York's avant-indie-folk scene for a while now. You could call Sonic Youth her musical next-door neighbours. She's a part of Thurston Moore's backing band, she records albums for his label Ecstatic Piece! and Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelly is to be heard on her latest album 'Wavelength'.
Mittland Och Leo (b)
Mittland Och Leo - Swedish for 'my land and lion' - is duo Joke Leonare Desmet and Milan Warmoeskerken from Antwerp. Described by Dennis Tyfus (Ultra Eczema) as 'dreamteam casio, organ, echo duo and synth enthousiasts'. Cutting Edge interprets it like this: "Hun muziek heeft iets weg van Beach House zonder gitaar en zang, Peaking Lights zonder loodzware grondlaag aan dubbassen."
Screening Of: Without A Net - 'The Resurrection of Julius Eastman'
Preview of a documentary in the making, by Aldolfo Doring, about the American minimalistic, pianist, composer, singer and dancer Julius Eastman.
