For those who thought that rootsy folk blues from the deep south was something only made in the first half of last century, by ex-convicts who stoked their own whiskey: you’re wrong!
This young lady from Tennessee makes blues as it should be made: raw, warm and sad. It is the sound of a night-time jam by the fire after a hard day's work on the cotton fields, of a hot afternoon in Memphis in a rocking-chair on the veranda, and of the soul of the gospel churches on Sunday.
Valerie June accompanies herself adeptly on ukulele, banjo and guitar, but it is especially her voice that goes right to the bone and won't leave you untouched. An artist verging on her breakthrough.
The debut album will be released later this year, on it she received assistance from the likes of Black Key Dan Auerbach. Keep an eye on this lady as you're sure to hear more from her.
