A singer is not a band but an onion. Those who peel off the layers get to the heart. And then get tears in their eyes, if it’s really, really good.
Jasper Steverlinck is really, really good.
He is one big voice.
The Voice of Flanders... and far beyond.
Angelic and enthralling: capable of moving man and beast with a single blow.
And he even looks good too.
Apart from heading up the charts (his version of Life on Mars by David Bowie sat at #1 for weeks), he is also a musician’s musician: countless colleagues have had their socks knocked off upon hearing him for the first time.
So too Brian Molko of Placebo, who told his English management to sign the vocal goldmine after seeing, and hearing, Jasper perform.
Whatever the story, Jasper is ready for the big wide world and vice versa.
This fall, Flanders is his first stop on the way to the rest of the world.
On his new album he returns to the source: his unique voice.
As bubbly as a Swiss mountain stream, as high as an eagle in full flight.
Furthermore: wonderful songs, too many to name, but all to sing along to.
His writing talent has ripened, the songs roll over the tongue like a Barolo from a top year. Accompanied by a guitar and the brilliant piano of Valentijn Elsen: beauty in simplicity.
A resounding voice, thanks to Jean Blaute, without whom Flemish pop music would have ceased in 1972.
If Jasper Steverlinck didn’t already exist then someone should have invented him.
