Double bill with two innovators of instrumental hip-hop!
It may well have been around for 40 years now, but since the success of Kendrick Lamar’s ‘To Pimp A Butterfly’ it would seem that everyone is back on the hip-hop again. Increasingly more people seem to be enjoying the genre and impressive hip-hop acts are shooting out of the ground like mushrooms. All Eyes On Hip Hip has already been actively working to introduce hip-hop to a wider audience for 12 years now. The clichés make way for quality hip-hop acts that verge on a breakthrough. AB and AEOHH get together to dish you up the hottest hip-hop acts on a regular basis.
Kutmah
Kutmah, born in Brighton, spent his formative years in Hollywood. As underground DJ and artist, that’s where he came into contact with the likes of The Gaslamp Killer, Dabrye and Flying Lotus... now established names in the LA beat scene. He released DJ mixes and increasingly produced his own work. He has established a steadily stronger reputation as a member of Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder label. His impressive album ‘The Revenge Of Black Belly Button’ – aka ‘TROBBB!’ – saw the light of day in August 2017. The likes of Jonwayne, Jeremiah Jae and Gonjasufi lent their voices to the album.
Samiyam
Samiyam is one of the hip-hop producers who went on to focus upon instrumental hip-hop after the Jay Dilla period. The legendary Low End Theory club in Los Angles is where he met Flying Lotus, who released Samiyam’s debut album ‘Rap Beats Vol.1’ on his Brainfeeder label. This was followed by a great deal of production work for the likes of Earl Sweatshirt, Captain Murphy and Pharoahe Monch.
Meanwhile, Samiyam has been a part of the Stones Throw family for a number of years now. ‘Animals Have Feelings’, released in 2016, is already a hip-hop classic (one on which the likes of Action Bronson, Jeremiah Jae and Earl Sweatshirt are to be heard). His most recent album ‘Pizza Party’ also received the support of Stones Throw.
