Glorious closer to an abundant year for Belgium’s best band

AB CURATED BY
AB turns 40 in September and we’re celebrating in style while the entire booking team takes a temporary break. Come again? Well, throughout the celebratory season, AB is handing the keys to the programming office over to a range of national and international curators with long-term associations with the venue.
What. A. Top year. For. Whispering Sons. Fuck! Their debut ‘Image’ was a musical upper-cut whereby the outright fantastic reviews – one rightly reading: ‘A Lynchian Nightmare’ – could be piled high. The release show in the AB Club was sold-out in advance and pretty much all the shows that followed were almost always a full house. They played at the Raf Simons défilé in Paris and Naomi Campbell came to congratulate them… What’s more, they were nominated for three MIA's this year and, to top it all off, they appeared at Best Kept Secret and on the main stage of Rock Werchter.
What better way to end the year in style than with a glorious show on the Main Stage of AB? Even better, they’ve quite a collection of surprises up their sleeve too: the band makes a big bash of it, as they invite a handful of their favourite (inter)national acts. That programme will be made known at a later date.
As ‘very special guests’ at the already long sold-out evening that they curated, Whispering Sons chose 2 acts from the impressive Danish label Posh Isolation and the Belgian band paper hats.
CTM (DK)
CTM is the solo project of Copenhagen-based singer / cellist / composer Cæcilie Trier. Her latest release ‘Red Dragon’ was put out in 2018 on Posh Isolation.
Trier is a classically trained musician who is active on the fringes of contemporary classical and with many diverse projects and collaborations (Chimes & Bells, Choir Of Young Believers, Boli Group …). Her previous album 'Suite For A Young Girl' was nominated for the prestigious Nordic Music Prize in 2017.
Croatian Amor (DK)
A creative jack-of-all-trades and pivotal figure in Copenhagen’s experimental scene, we know Loke Rahbek from the likes of the fabulous electronic noise performance art duo Damien Dubrovnik, as 1/3 of Lust For Youth, and as a member of black metal band Sexdrome. Aside from collaborations with the likes of Puce Mary, Powell and Iceage, he is also one of the driving forces behind the independent label / music store Posh Isolation.
He has already released six albums as Croatian Amor, his experimental industrial ambient project. Resident Advisor wrote of his latest album ‘Isa’ (which was met with many fine reviews): ’Isa never lets the listener get too comfortable. This is often to its detriment, as its narratives bump up against moments of real beauty, casting a robotic detachment over even its warmest moments. But Rahbek does an admirable job of presenting visions that are hard to shake.’
Then there was online magazine XLR8 that wrote: ‘Isa finds the artist seeking the perfect balance once again: aiming at both disquieting the listener and making their hairs stand on end’
paper hats (B)
We will see Belgian band paper hats as aftershow in the AB Club. Their debut EP, released in 2016, was flooded with high praise. Not only did they win the ‘best debut’ prize at Red Bull’s Vinyl Frontier, newspaper De Morgen wrote of the album: ‘bevat zowat de beste twintig minuten muziek uit eigen land die we dit jaar al hoorden’
After more than 2 years of silence surrounding the band, suddenly this year in April there was a new track on the ‘A sentimental Mixtape #1’ compilation, a cassette-release on the sentimental Records label run by Fenne and Kobe of Whispering Sons.
The band makes the sort of electronic music that is impossible to stand still to: complex, live-drum driven, groovy rhythms and multi-layered melodies generated by old analogue synths. On the eve of the release of their 12' LP 'Slipper', they will play a unique set in AB Club - supported by live visuals from the inimitable video artist Jaak De Digitale.
To round off this long and eventful year for Whispering Sons in style, there is also an afterparty with DJ duo ‘DJ Frankie & Stevie’
Dit concert kadert in het Autumn Falls Festival.
