Watch the Emiliana Torrini report on ABtv.
Icelandic resident of England Emiliana Torrini has thoroughly stolen our heart with her Rough Trade debut 'Fisherman's Woman'. Not only ours apparently... Quite a while ago she won 3 awards in Iceland for 'Female Singer of the Year', 'Pop Album of the Year' and 'Video of the Year' (that extremely cute clip for her single 'Sunny Road'). Her whispery, intimate songs are also appealing live. Remember her remarkable visit during Domino a number of years back (including entertaining commentary in-between songs) in a sold-out ABBox.
She debuted in '99 with the trip-hoppy 'Love In The Time Of Science' (with Tears For Fears' Roland Orzabal behind the dials). However these days her world is closer to that of Nick Drake or Feist rather than, say, Portishead. Also worth mentioning: Torrini wrote 'Gollum's Song' for Lord of the Rings - at the request of director Peter Jackson himself -, wrote for (and toured with) Thievery Corporation, and actually provided Kylie Minogue with a number one hit by writing 'Slow' for her.
Several years ago we wrote that 'Torrini is in the process of becoming one of the greats'. Well, now it's happened! This Autumn her brand new - excellent - album 'Me And Armini' will be released and it will certainly mean her breakthrough. Her exclusive visit to the ABClub shall undoubtedly be one of the last that she even gives in a small club. Want to bet?
