Catchy electro-pop & soul are trumps with Ellie Goulding

In 2010 one Elena Jane Goulding, Ellie for the friends, won the prestigious ‘BBC Sound Of…’ competition (whereby an annual hoard of ‘artists on the verge of a breakthrough’ are presented). We've seen the likes of Adele, Keane, 50 Cent, Mika and Michael Kiwanuka (who outdid the likes of Frank Ocean in 2012) appear on the podium, and so too this Ellie Goulding. The starting shot for a happening career… Debut album ‘Lights’, full of catchy electro-pop, shot to the top of the charts, she won the Critics’ Choice Award at the Brit Awards in ’10, toured the planet, and performed at the wedding of the 20th century: that of the British Crown Prince William and his Kate Middleton.
On ‘Halcyon’, her second on Polydor (Universal Music), Goulding swaps the self-cited electro/dance-influences that were characteristic of her debut for a more mature sound that is closer to soul and pure pop. Forerunner for the new album, ‘Anything Could Happen’, was played to bits on British radio, while we in Flanders still have to make do with the fine single ‘Lights’ from her first album of the same name.
After her visit to the Botanique (May ’10), Miss Goulding dropped by Kiewit that same summer, playing a more than sound concert. “From the moment she opened her throat, Goulding had the audience by the scruff of their neck. She sang simply fantastically and also had enough good songs to fill a fine half hour. An excellent set.” A clearly convinced Bart Steenhaut dished out four stars for it in De Morgen. She's sure to gather stars again in AB!
