Buena Vista Social Club father and iconic voice of 'Chan Chan'
Cuban singer, guitarist and songwriter Eliades Ochoa is known as one of the original members of the Buena Vista Social Club®️ and as the voice of the iconic song ‘Chan Chan’ on their debut album. Long before Buena Vista Social Club, he was one of Cuba’s most popular guitarists and a member of legendary bands from Santiago, such as El Quarteto Patria. In the wake of Buena Vista’s phenomenal success, Ochoa released 9 albums, won 4 Latin Grammy Awards, and received a Grammy nomination for ‘Afrocubism’, a project with top musicians from Mali.
On October 3, he will present his new album ‘Guajiro’ (release on May 23 via World Circuit Records). The songs on ‘Guajiro’ – most of which he composed himself – are the most intimate and personal that Eliades has ever recorded. “The album tells a lot about myself and my life, and each song has a lot of meaning”, he says. Guest musicians include the likes of Rubén Blades, Joan As Police Woman and Charlie Musselwhite.
The ‘Cuban Johnny Cash’ looks tough in his iconic black outfit with signature hat and cowboy boots. His songs are loaded with life’s wisdom, the sort you can only learn the hard way. With his distinctive voice, unique style and deeply rooted Cuban sound, his music has a timeless and universal appeal that also works on the hips.
