Bad Seeds and Grinderman violist dusts off his own band.
8:00 pm Papa M (W/ David Pajo)
Papa M is not as illustrious as he would seem. To say Papa M is to say David Pajo. To say David Pajo is to say Slint, Arial M and Pajo. Pajo also plays/played with Stereolab, Tortoise and Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Zwan, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and, more recently, even with Interpol. In ’07 Warren Ellis (Dirty Three) invited Papa M to All Tomorrow’s Parties while he was acting as curator. This will be a fine reunion.
9:00 pm Dirty Three
Dirty Three is still the instrumental trio encompassing the enigmatic violist Warren Ellis. We know Warren Ellis himself as the exuberant sidekick to Nick Cave’s Bad Seeds and the temporarily on-hold Grinderman. Their latest delivery ‘Toward The Low Sun’ is soon to be released, after a hiatus of 7 years (since their album ‘Cinder’ from ’05), and according to Bella Union it sounds like ‘a punk avant-garde art-jazz record’. Ellis says of it: “We wanted this one to be a return to the more improvised and instinctive approach of the earlier recordings. I think we may have cracked it. This may well be the definitive album from Dirty Three.”
The line-up has remained unchanged after all those years. Warren Ellis on violin, Mick Turner (who is building up a career as visual artist in his homeland Australia) on guitar and Jim White on drums. The latter was indeed also to be heard with Cat Power, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy and PJ Harvey over recent years.
Those who have seen Dirty Three live at work the past certainly know that they're signing up for a nearly unreal musical trip.
