Explosive black metal meets post-rock meets shoegaze
Black metal still occupies a special place in our musical heart. The most radical musical genre ever still continues to spit out fantastic bands like Liturgy, Locrian and Deafheaven and in turn inspires acts like Mount Eerie and The Haxan Cloak (that in turn then make a difference on the latest Björk album).
Deafheaven – the band name hails from ‘Sonnet 29’ by Shakespeare – resides, ironically enough, in sunny San Francisco. This black metal has grasped us mercilessly by the throat ever since their debut ‘Road To Judah’ from ’11. They avoid clichés like the plague. Their breakthrough album ‘Sunbather’ even bathes in waves of post-rock and shoegaze. Pitchfork called the album a modern classic and now even ANTI- (the label that has both Tinariwen and Tom Waits under contract) has fallen for their latest album ‘New Bermuda’. Hail! Fans of Mogwai, Explosions In The Sky and Joy Divison who want to broaden their horizons a little: take a leap of faith, because this is just the challenging thing for you!
