100% vintage gospel from trusted Daptone Records stables
“Whether you’re talking about hip-hop, country & western, blues or Mozart, all music tries to do the same basic thing: put feeling into sound. The Como Mamas do that just about as close to perfect as you can.”
(Neil Sugerman - The Sugarmen 3)
If you read ‘Daptone Records Proudly Presents...’ then you've already been won over. The trusted establishment from Brooklyn has been delivering the best contemporary vintage soul and funk in the world, for years now. Plus: never disappoints. Think: Charles Bradley, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, The Budos Band or Naomi Shelton & The Gospel Queens too. Daptone Records now launches their ‘latest’ act: The Como Mamas.
The Como Mamas – from Como in Mississippi – serve you up 100% vintage gospel on their album ‘Get An Understanding’. The trio has been singing together in their local church since they were kids and in ’59 they even met Alan Lomax, who came to Como then to make field-recordings. Gospel couldn't sound any purer.
Belgian blues-god Roland certainly wrote enthusiastically in the liner notes on Tiny Legs Tim's debut: “Just with his six strings and stomping foot tap board, Tiny Legs Tim brings back the ghost and magic of Bukka White and Robert Johnson.” And if you were wondering who that Bukka White is: he is just like Son House, an old blues god who in turn inspired our god Jack White.
Please note: Como Mamas want to approach it differently and half their respective sets and spread them over the evening. Which means: Tiny Legs Tim will play a 20 minute set, followed by an equally ‘long’ set from Como Mamas. After that, Tiny Legs Tim will play again and Como Mamas will round everything off.
