100% vintage soul/gospel from The Dap-Kings stables
If you’re looking for vintage soul, gospel and funk, you’re always in the right place at Daptone Records. It surely can’t get any purer than that, these days. So too with Naomi Shelton and her famous Gospel Queens, who were also to be heard on the latest Black Box Revelation album. Naomi Shelton presents soul as it could have been expressed in, say, the ’60s… by Aretha Franklin… and it still sounds extremely relevant and contemporary. Naomi’s voice sounds enormously raw, almost masculine, and is wonderful to hear combined with her Gospel Queens as backing vocals.
Even though Naomi sang in the church from a very young age, it was only in ’09 that she debuted in style at 66 years of age, with ‘What have You Done, My Brother?’. The impressive successor ‘Cold World’ was finally released in ’14. Superb in a sold-out AB Club in ’09. Now again. Wanna bet?
