DOMINO: DAN LE SAC VS. SCROOBIUS PIP + B. DOLAN + LAURA DOCKRILL
8:00 PM - Laura Dockrill
Pretty much the first performance by poet/spoken word performer/illustrator Laura Dockrill outside of her homeland UK. She graduated several years ago from the famous Brit School of Performing Arts and is close with both Scroobius Pip and Kate Nash, for whom she provides artwork and merchandise. She was hailed by Elle as ‘One of the Top 20 hot faces to watch for 2010’ and by The Times as ‘one of the top ten literary stars of ‘08’. Her books 'Mistakes in the Background' and ‘Ugly Shy Girl’ are highly recommended. Laura Dockrill – who has now buried her alter-ego DOCKERS MC – is exceptionally exciting as live performer, where she constantly borrows from the hip-hop culture. Dockrill talking about that: "By keeping a rhythm and keeping your flow interesting that's going to help your audience stay involved,". Be sure to expect Laura Dockrill as a theme through this evening.
9:00 PM - B. Dolan
Master performer B. Dolan is no unknown to the AB. He already appeared here in ’08 with his mate Sage Francis, on whose Strange Famous Records he also resides. His soon-to-be-released latest album ‘Fallen House, Sunken City’ was produced by indie beatsmith Alias (see: Anticon.). California's Urb wrote of him: “it’s a hard hitting in-your-face type of jam, attacking corporate douchery and the like over Alias’s drum-heavy boombap production”. He debuted as slam poet in New York's Nuyorican Poets Cafe, a handful of albums generated ever impressive reviews in the hip-hop underground. He's already toured with kindred spirits like Sage Francis, Sole and Buck 65. To round up, even more name dropping? B. Dolan is also known under his alter-ego’s Bombzo Way, Bombzo the Clown and Evel Knievel. But, phew, you can just call him Bernard too.
10:00 PM - Dan Le Sac vs. Scroobius Pip (uk)
We're already a fan of the name in itself: Dan Le Sac vs. Scroobius Pip! Lets start with a piece of trivia: The alter-ego of rapper David Peter Meads is a deliberate ‘mis-spelling’ of the poem by Edward Lear (The Scroobious Pip). Their combination of humour, poetry, laptop and hip-hop produces an idiosyncratic mix. One that hasn't remained unheard: the singles 'Thou Shalt Always Kill' (all together now: “Nirvana? Just a band!. Radiohead? Just a band!”), and 'Letter From God To Man' (based on a Radiohead sample) did well on the radio. Humour you say? In order to promote their debut, they took part in the selections for The X Factor. Scroobius Pip auditioned before a jury consisting of Simon Cowell and Sharon Osbourne. The clip of this made it into Q’s Top Ten Clips of ’08. Even if it was fake. Their second album ‘The Logic Of Chance’ is soon to be released, with the single ‘Get Better’ as forerunner.
Oh yes, in the US their album is released via Strange Famous Records, the label on which B. Dolan also resides... and Laura Dockrill is a fan! So, hey, the circle is complete!
