“Icon” is the title of Daan’s latest single, in which he questions his many previous (and extremely diverse) guises. Sometimes pompously megalomanic, then other times vulnerably intimate, but always unpredictable: that is/was Daan. Up until now, appearing in a combination of cynical lyrics with extremely danceable electronic music. From “Housewife” by way of “Swedish Designer Drugs”, to “Victory” of “The Player”. Always as a variant on that typical Belgian surrealism.
Daan’s latest CD “Manhay”, with the hit single “Exes”, provides a radical turnaround in sound. Completely live – no synths - no beats - pure wild and emotional music with Daan’s dark vocals up front. More personal than ever and as characteristic as a black & white product of his own lyrical environment. Returning to the source, without losing his typical personal manner of song writing. Back to basics, as it were.
True to tradition, in order to round off a successful year that contained yet another golden album and three notable singles, this year Daan will again be throwing a special party in December.
Aside from the fantastic band that has accompanied him for years (Jeroen Swinnen on keyboards – Steven Janssens on guitar – Isolde Lasoen on drums – Otti Vanderwerfon bass), for this end-of-year show he’ll also be inviting Jorg Strecker on guitar, as well as the 2 previous ‘sixth wheel’s on his circus wagon: Gregory Frateur (Dez Mona, vocals), and Jo Hermans (trumpet, and known from The Player tour).
The songs from the latest album ‘Manhay’, supplemented by a series of gems and hits from his now 10 year long solo career, will sound even warmer with this 8-member band.
Pure emotion and energy on stage.
PS: On 23 November the VRT will be broadcasting a surprising Belpop documentary about Daan’s turbulent first 25 years as a musician.
