Heartache in fresh indie-pop/shoegaze packaging!
“Cults' combination of mid-'60s girl-group and '90s shoegazing is still bewitching!” (Q MAGAZINE)
“Het debuut van Cults (uit ’11) staat vol ogenschijnlijk frisse popsongs met een sinistere ondertoon: je schopt zo je schoenen uit, maar er liggen wolfsklemmen in het gras.” (HUMO)
“Their second album remains indebted to 60s girl groups and bubblegum pop, but joyous songs are delivered through gritted teeth.” (THE GUARDIAN)
The biography of New York's Cults is quite clear: second issue ‘Static’ is a breakup album. The relationship of former film-student-duo Madeline Follin and Brian Oblivion ran aground after the Pitchfork-led hype around their musical project Cults died down and a successor had to be created for all that good stuff on their self-titled debut from '11. Not an easy assignment, with a painful separation to digest, but singer/guitarist Brian Oblivion likes to give it a philosophical twist… “There’s a feeling our generation has. The feeling there’s always something better around the corner, that everyone is born to be a star. The feeling that life is waiting for you, and yet it’s not happening. All of that is static.”
Musically, the duo surfs further on the dreamy shoegaze/indie-pop of their debut - just like generation-mates Dum Dum Girls, Best Coast and Veronica Falls - mixed with the Phil Spectorian sixties sound of The Shangri-Las and The Supremes. They remained true to their label ‘In The Name Of’ and so they can still call Lily Allen their label boss, an honour they share with Tom Odell.

The Spectors – living proof that shoegazing is also happening at high levels in this part of the world – can kick it all off! Just like the EP that followed it, debut single ‘Nico’ was recorded with the assistance of Chris Urbanowicz (Ex-Editors!) – who also pulled out the guitar and synth along the way, to give extra colour to the songs. Pias will be the label, March the month of truth. Our land has gained another promising young band!
