The young Colbie grew up in California, with a father who co-produced 'Rumours' and 'Tusk', those smash hits from Fleetwood Mac. Colbie only really learned how to play guitar and write mature songs at the age of 19. From then on things went fast for this young talent: together with Mikal Blue and Jason Reeves she worked on what would eventually be 'Coco' (a title that had always been her nickname). Influences vary from Californian rock, to Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder, to Lauryn Hill and Bob Marley. A new 'unsigned artist' MySpace phenomenon is born when her songs turn out to be listened to up to 23 million times. In 2007 Colbie Caillat then goes on to sign to Universal and 'Coco' immediately shoots into the Top 5 of the American Billboard charts. Meanwhile gold in the USA for the sale of 500,000 copies and undoubtedly just as many contented fans, because her music can indeed make a person happy.
