Buffy Sainte-Marie is an astonishing 'native' American performer. She?s been stepping into the breach musically and lyrically since the sixties. First solo as folkie with the likes of 'Universal soldier', one of the prototype 'protest songs' (which became both a huge hit and a sing-along evergreen). In spite of more than enough political opposition, along the way she was able to work on the likes of Sesame Street or the single 'Up where we belong' - that mega 'Grammy' hit from the film 'An officer and a gentleman'.
But especially: since the CD 'Coincidences (and likely stories)' in '92, she returned in full as wellspoken critic of everything that blemishes our world. Further more: Buffy Sainte-Marie meanwhile makes her moving recordings using the most sophisticated resources. 'Running For The Drum', her latest, 18th CD has now finally arrived here too (via V2). Again, it's a collaboration with hi-tech wizard Chris Birkett, containing recordings made in France, Canada, New Zealand and in her new house in Kapahi, Hawaï (with immense gratitude to the computer.)
Those who follow the notable careers and releases of Robbie Robertson or John Trudell know where to go. Powwow!
