HIP-HOP 50
Soul, hip-hop, jazz & funk with an Irish accent
Frontman Fatboy grew up in the industrial apartment towers of Ballymun, to the north of Dublin. Since sports or fighting weren’t his thing, he taught himself to play guitar and he wrote rap songs on the toilet. The mythical flats have since been demolished, but fortunately, that piece of history was captured by Irish photographer Ross McDonnell in the photo book Joyrider.
Fatboy met his producer through SoundCloud, which is pretty typical for the DIY generation. He soon found other musical mates there, who have opinions on all the sounds they like to hear. Bricknasty came out with its debut album Ina Crueler in early June 2023. The result is fresh, contemporary, and sounds like something somewhere between R&B, soul, hip-hop, jazz, blues, funk, and falsettos.
"We don’t write mega protest anthems, we just make music that contributes a little to the value of the world in our own small, insignificant way”, says the band. This promises to be a memorable club night.
