Porcelain id is the pseudonym under which Hubert Tuyishime has been releasing music since 2020. The Rwandan-born, Antwerp-based artist distinguished themselves right away through their distinctive style characterised by raw and emotional vocals. They switch naturally between Dutch and English with personal lyrics about identity, gender, and racism.
In 2021, Porcelain id self-released the EP Mango. A year later came Reprise,
a stripped-down reinterpretation of their debut. Whereas Mango was a concept EP about queerness, police brutality, and identity, Reprise is an intimate and poetic work inspired by drastic change. The only new song on the EP is Vlaanderen, a gospel song and a tragically beautiful ode to life’s setbacks. It was written on the night Hubert’s son was born, an overwhelming moment that reminded Hubert of their own childhood, the difficulties and growing pains in the relationship between parents and a queer child, between a society and its homeless, between people on opposite sides of the margins. Vlaanderen may well be their most personal song to date and is a true crowd favourite.
"Very developed sound for someone as young as myself. By which I actually mean I wouldn't be able to do it myself," said Meskerem Mees about Porcelain id in the preliminaries of Sound Track 2021-2022.
Spinvis - Good Friday saw the release of the seventh album by Erik de Jong, a.k.a Spinvis – one of the Netherlands’ quirkiest and best songwriters. Be-Bop-A-Lula, the primal cry at the birth of rock-‘n’-roll, is the title of the album on which he merrily muses in his inimitable style. De Jong: "It's about us. It's about our time. It's about our life on an evening in the cosmos."
A glimpse through the Spinvis kaleidoscope is never the same but always familiar. Amid a sweaty festival audience, in the velvet of the theatre, in the echo of your window sill, or on the finest bandstand in Brussels – his music puts everyone who is open to it in the same mood. Slightly melancholic but also hopeful, free, and forward-facing.
