For those who want be become an elderly musician in a dignified manner, jazz is a fine haven. Just look at Billy Hart, who is well over 70 but has an enviable musical history in tow. He worked with soul greats like Otis Redding, Sam & Dave and was sideman to jazzcats like Jimmy Smith, Wes Montgomery, McCoy Tyner, Wayne Shorter, Pharoah Sanders, Herbie Hancock and Stan Getz. Hart was even to be heard on ‘On The Corner’ (’72) by Miles Davis.
He's been running his own quartet since '03, one in which tenor saxophonist Mark Turner and The Bad Plus pianist Ethan Iverson play a starring role. His latest two albums - ‘All Our Reasons’ (’12) and ‘One Is The Other’ (’14) – were both released via the renowned ECM label.
