UK’s best-kept secret Biffy Clyro come to shake things up!
Since their debut album, 'Blackened Sky', these Scottish troublemakers have been steering a definite course through poppy post-hardcore, fierce power rock, and bombastic alternative rock. In their native UK, these three gentlemen have easily been filling arenas since their fifth record, 'Only Revolutions', which was nominated for the prestigious Mercury Prize ’10. In Belgium, however, they have remained, as yet, under the radar. Top singles like ‘Mountains’ and ‘Bubbles’ weren’t picked up by Belgian radio stations which is why, here, Biffy Clyro is still the UK’s best-kept secret.
On their new album, 'Opposites', a double album that will be on shelves at the end of January, they take the approach they took on their previous, critically acclaimed, album record even further: mature songs saturated with strings, background choirs, and epic refrains alternate with testosterone bombs such as the first single ‘Stingin’ Belle’. The sharp, unconventional lyrics are the proverbial cherry on the – err – haggis.
Biffy Clyro are a real sensation live and they have already proved it at the VK and the Botanique in Brussels and at Pukkelpop ’10. According to De Morgen ‘their set at Pukkelpop was energetic, with stark guitars and lively hooks, and had they a frontman with a hell of a voice who knows how to write damned catchy numbers’. That same autumn, they blew the roof off at TRIX and I predict that they will do the same on 17 February ’13 in the AB Box, and on a Sunday too!
