Hailing from a very modest fishing village in the mecca of folky singer-songwriters: Iceland – you won’t get any more authentic than Axel Flóvent. Every song he writes feels like it was penned next to a cosy campfire on an ice-cold winter night. He makes wonderful gems – just like countrymates such as Of Monsters And Men, Ásgeir and Júníus Meyvant (just recently in a sold-out AB Club) – although Axel also adds tasty indie-folk harmonies à la Ben Howard, Bon Iver and Fleet Foxes.
The songs on his very first EP ‘Forest Fires’ (2015) feel very melancholy and dreamy, just like Icelandic music is supposed to. Recently released single ‘Your Ghost’ also fits into that trend, although the track also contains a careful wink toward The War On Drugs (with echoing guitar riffs and tight drums). Modern folk music with the cast-iron Icelandic quality seal!
