Clarinetist, pianist, composer and singer Angel Bat Dawid is well on her way to becoming the grand dame of the Chicago jazz scene. Her debut album The Oracle (2019), which was surprisingly recorded with her mobile phone, was released on the influential International Anthem label. It is a strong sample of free jazz, that leans toward the cosmic sound of Pharoah Sanders and the afro-futurism of Sun Ra. Her music tells the tale of the black community. In an interview with Jazz Now, she says: "I characterize my sonic aesthetic as Great Black Music always. I am a Black woman so all the music that comes outta of me comes with the history, the culture, the joys, the suffering the ups and downs and everything in between of the Black experience.” Her concerts – among others, in our Club and at Dutch festival Le Guess Who? – were showered with praise and described as a moment of collective healing. So be sure not to miss her intimate solo concert in our Salon!
