Label night around Ghent's quality jazz label
Sdban kicked off in 2014 with the banging release of Funky Chicken. Nowadays they are considered to be one of Belgium’s premier jazz labels. They are partially responsible for the success of a new gulf of cutting-edge Belgian jazz artists such as STUFF., De Beren Gieren, Steiger, ECHT! and TaxiWars. After a few cosy label nights in their hometown Ghent they have chosen to showcase their talent in Brussels on a regular basis, more specifically at AB.
Schroothoop - The instrumentarium of Rik Staelens, Margo Maex and Timo Vantyghem consists of everything they can find in the streets of Brussels: construction site buckets, PVC tubes, tin cans, clotheslines, pots, pans… you name it. With their self-made instruments they create a danceable, unique, sultry and at times meditative sound.
Their second album Macadam came out on Sdban Records and was showered with rave reviews. De Standaard stated: “Echoes from the Afro-Cuban jazz and Arabic music, hybrid electronic sounds derived from dub and ambient music. A world of sound that feels metropolitan as it connects West with East, North and South with limitless creativity. schroothoop combines the sound and the identity of the concrete jungle.” Nice.
KAU is an instrumental project from Brussels with André Breidlid (drums), Matteo Genovese (bass) and Jan Janzen (keys). Inspired by jazz they create a head-bobbing atmosphere with broken hearts and heavy grooves. The trio vouches for an organic and rich sound by improvising with acoustic instruments.
Their music is original, daring and heavily influenced by artists such as BADBADNOTGOOD and Christian Scott. Their debut album will appear on 22 September via Sdban.
LũpḁGangGang is a band that balances instrumental and vocal sounds, alongside improv and written music.
In 2022 the band released their third EP ‘Urban Detox’. In March 2023 a debut album followed called ‘Dopamine Overdose’. For both records they collaborated with Nicolas Rombouts (Dez Mona). They are influenced by Kamaal Williams, The Breathing Effect, STUFF., Black Midi, etc
