BLACK FLOWER (B)
Black Flower is the remarkable, internationally resounding project by saxophone player and composer Nathan Daems. His biggest influences are, without doubt, the Ethiopian jazz of Mulatu Astatke and the Afrobeat of the Nigerian Fela Kuti. There are also echoes of Masada, the masterful project by one of the most prominent contemporary saxophonists: John Zorn. It is well worth giving the 10-part Masada series a listen (from ‘Alef’ in ’94 to ‘Yod’ in ’97).
