Turkish psychedelica afterparty following the Altın Gün concert
Free for Altın Gun ticket buyers.
Altın Gün says he’s inspired by the heyday of Turkish psychedelica. In the ‘60s and ‘70s, Anatolian rock/folk fused with Western rock ’n roll. Artists like Erkin Koray, Ersen, Barış Manço, Selda Bağcan or Cem Karaca were the Turkish heroes – and often political activists – of that time. AB has long supported the genre and in recent years welcomed Selda Bağcan, Mustafa Özkent and the younger generation, including Gaye Su Akyol, Derya Yildirim, BaBa ZuLa, Lalalar and Altın Gün. Time to open the gates of the genre onto the dancefloor!
MONSTERA OCCULTA B2B KURT OVERBERGH (BE) 10pm to 11:30pm
Back-to-back by two Turkish psychedelica lovers! Monstera Occulta calls herself ‘selectress’, SWANA music lover, Black metal enthusiast and vinyl junkie. Check out her mixtapes on SoundCloud or her weekly programme on Bruzz and become an instant fan of Farrah. Kurt Overbergh, artistic director of AB, has already shared his love of danceable Turkish psychedelica from behind the turntables at Bozar (See Festival), Tomorrowland and De Roma (after an Altın Gün concert).
JASPER V (ALTIN GUN) (NL) 11:30pm to 1am
Jasper V is Jasper Verhulst: founder and bass player of Altın Gün, and also crate digger. Merve Daşdemir (frontwoman of Altın Gün): “Jasper knows stuff I haven’t even heard of. He’s truly a digger. Wherever we go, the first thing that he does is go to the nearest local record shop and just dig.” His DJ sets reflect that. You can expect an eclectic mix of “exotic, cosmic sounds from all around the world. Unknown Euro disco, cosmic cumbia, groovy Latin, funky Bollywood, Turkish psych, and other tasty obscurities.”
KORNELIA BINICEWICZ (LADIES ON RECORDS) (TR/PL) 1am to 3am
Polish-born Istanbul resident Kornelia Binicewicz is a curator, anthropologist, record collector (of mainly female Turkish music) and founder of Ladies on Records. She’s the woman behind the compilations Uzelli Psychedelic Anadolu – a selection of tracks by the Turkish label Uzelli Kaset – and the outstanding and stunningly designed Turkish Ladies. Female Singers from Turkey 1974 – 1988 that appeared on her own label.
During her highly danceable and vinyl only DJ sets we hear “hypnotizing grooves, belly dance beasts with synths and organs, edgy sounds from all four corners of the earth blend with westernized arrangements and hip styles of 60s, 70s & 80s.” We almost lost count, but she’s appearing at AB for the fourth time!
