LeFtO invites you into his universe
AB CURATED BY
AB turns 40 in September and we’re celebrating in style while the entire booking team takes a temporary break. Come again? Well, throughout the celebratory season, AB is handing the keys to the programming office over to a range of national and international curators with long-term associations with the venue.
One such curator is LeFtO. He has been one of the leading DJs in Belgium and beyond for nearly twenty-five years. He has introduced many new bands to Belgian radio and, through his Studio Brussel programme, has brought us the best of the London jazz scene, the crème de la crème of the rap scene and the very latest from the international electro scene. However, he has also provided a stepping stone to a wider public for a great deal of Belgian talent. On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of his Studio Brussel show, he has assembled a programme ranging from jazz to hip-hop and house:
Black Flower is the striking project of multi-instrumentalist Nathan Daems. Greatest source of inspiration is certainly the Ethiopian jazz of Mulatu Astatke and the Afrobeat of Nigeria’s Fela Kuti. There are also echoes of Masada (see: John Zorn) and also dub & Eastern influences.
Blu Samu x Martha Da’ro x Miss Angel, the three queens of Belgian hip-hop appear on stage together for the very first time.
AliA is still only 20 years old but yet has already been hailed as one of Belgium’s most promising DJs. In her deliciously danceable sets, the DJ from Leuven surfs effortlessly from funk to house, via hip-hop and soul.
Children of Zeus is the soul project of Konny Kon and Tyler Daley, two respected MCs from Manchester. Their music has moved like hot cakes and there is more soul food soon to come!
Kiosk Soundsystem, The guys behind Brussels' hippest internet radio are serving proper selections. This time not from their wooden shack, but in the AB Box!
Renaat Vandepapeliere is, together with Sabine Maes, the founder of the legendary Belgian label R&S Records.
Supafly Collective is a DJ collective from Brussels. They organise parties and have a radio programme in that women in the hip-hop scene are the point of focus.
